Book review: The Monk who Sold his Ferrari, by Robin Sharma

Wonderful Sunday everyone!1st of May today, a wonderful day to enjoy the nature and have a relaxing Sunday, doing the things you love! Today, I would like to present to you a short review of the book “The Monk who Sold his Ferrari”, by Robin Sharma. By now you should know the drill: Grab your cup of coffee, or tea, find a cosy little corner and indulge into it!

Short summary:

Julien, a successful lawyer who lived a hectic life, after getting a sudden heart attack in the middle of a case, and after his doctor advice to immediately change his way of living, or prepare to die, he took the decision to leave his job and travel to India.

When he arrived there, he mingled with the locals and started a self-discovery hoping to ignite again the sparkling happiness from his youth and find the true meaning of life.

There he met a Yogi, who told him about some monks leaving in the mountain. The Yogi suggested that these monks could further help him in his quest. Therefore, Julien decided to ascend the mountain and search for them. When he did spot one of the monks, he was taken to the place the monks lived. Seeing Julien’s spark and willingness to learn, the monks promised to pass on to him their wisdom, if he would then in return go back in the West and further spread this knowledge to those in need.

After spending a lot of time with the monks and after having changed his own life, he indeed returned to the West. There he met his ex-associate John, who in his surprise encountered a young and energized Julien, that looked like a brand-new person. Julien seeing that John needed a change, he spent his evening with him to convey to John the learnings and teachings the monks taught him. During the time spend together, Julien explained to John all the secrets for a meaningful and happy life. Among others Julien emphasized that:

  • It is crucial to take care of our mind and our thoughts.
  • We should think more peaceful thoughts.
  • Quick fixes do not work. Persistence is the key, and we need to be patient.
  • We must find what drives us and what we like to do and pursue it every day. Once we find our purpose, life is easy and rewarding.
  • Concentration is at the root of mental mastery.
  • We must actively replace negative thoughts with positive ones.
  • We should spend a few minutes a day envisioning what we want to be.
  • True nobility lies in being better of our previous self.
  • We need to live our life as it is the last one.
  • Words are a powerful tool.
  • Our most valuable asset is time.
  • We must always remember the power of laughter.

He also spoke about the 10 ancient rituals and a very important mantra.

After having spent a long evening and night, explaining to John all the secrets for a meaningful life, he then moved ahead to spread his knowledge as well to others in need.

Why I liked this book:
The book was created in a simple and concise way, including very helpful tips and a lot of practical examples. Concrete to-do actions for immediate and clear implementation, wrapped-up in an enjoyable story, made listening to this audiobook a pleasant experience.

Main take away from the book is:
Time is the most valuable asset we have. Simple daily improvements will elevate our life. When we find our life purpose, no matter what we pursue we will do it well and with content.
